Our church has recently adopted a new policy that I think is a really good one.

The policy: The projection computer is always the newest and most powerful computer in the church!

If the senior pastor or anyone else needs a new desktop computer, we will order a new projection system and he gets the prior projection system.  Our pastor suggested this policy.  With all of the multimedia that people are used to today, doing anything less than your best on the screen will be a letdown for seekers.

With all that this software does (motion transitions, shawdows...) If you are using this software to its full potential, you will want an up to date computer.   We will no longer use the 3 year old computer that just barley meets the minimum requirements... That computer is still fine for word processing or almost anything else.

We don't have an official policy, but that's basically what we have done lately. After running SSP for a few years on a couple of desktop hand me downs, we bought a projection PC specifically specced out to be a projection PC a few years ago.

Now we are in the process of purchasing a new projection PC and the old one will either become the audio capture PC or a replacement for the dinosaur in the secretary's office (you know, the important one with all the church's financial records and such on it. The one that probably gets the most use during the week.)

Both pastor's have gone to laptops, so those aren't in the mix. In fact, the Associate pastor has taken to using SSP on the Saturday Night service, downstairs, so we'll be ordering a projection license for him.

That gives us a backup SSP machine for emergencies, although it won't be near as powerful, it would be able to throw songs up on the screen in a pinch.

Our church is lucky that someone, in the past, recognized that the church financials should be on a server. The church has a file server that is used for most things, but mostly for the finacials (we use ACS).

No for the bad part. The person that set up the PC only set a 3GB OS partition. Guess what I get to do as soon as I can. Yep. make an image of the OS and Data drives, and rebuild the RAID with a larger OS. I may even look into upgrading to Server 2003, make it a DC, increase the drive size.

If you've got Windows server, you'd just as well go with a domain controller.

Our "network drive" is a shared folder on the secretaries PC. No domain, so all userids and passwords have to be kept in sync on the various computers.

Someone has convinced them that having a domain is insecure, as anyone with an account would be able to logon to any machine on the domain. While this is ture, file permissions can control who goes where. You can also control which machines a person can logon to. It's a bit of an uphill battle for an IT guy.

Right now, I still need to increase the OS partition to do anything.

We have the same basic policy, the most powerful pc is the projection pc, when we replace it, the old one gets handed down, usually to the secretary. We also run a Windows 2003 network, with a domain controller, however I am fortunate, our folks have a limited understanding of a network so they accept my word on it.

Our chuch has been using Ubuntu CE on all our computers (except for the projection computer. That we dual boot).
We do pass down our old projection computers to the pastor and secratary but we usually like to upgrade memory in those and instal a clean copy of Ubuntu before putting into use.
We also have a server that currently has Ubuntu 8.04 LTS installed and ubuntu has not let us down since the change from windows.

RE: Typical verse order by mmeltser in User Support - V7

Any thoughts on -- "how do I get a song in a program back to it's typical order? Is the only option to remove it and re-add it"

Thanks.

Sorry. No way to do that with SSP. Might make a good wish for the wishlist.

Adding sounds to transitions by clee in User Support - V7

As a former PowerPoint user, I would often find the need to add sounds to my transitions, such as a bang, roar, etc.  any kind of a wav file.  Is there a way to do so in SSP?  For instance, in the middle of a bible verse, I want to add a sound effect.  The old way that I would do so in PowerPoint would be to duplicate a slide, and have no movement transition but sound only on the second slide.  I would advance the slide when the sound was needed.  I would really appreciate any advice on this!  Thx!

Here's the XML format that SSP uses.

Hopefully that will help. I've not tried it before.

Background improv issue by iamgap in User Support - V7

If Background Improv is set as your default motion background, you cannot use an image background. Even if you have Transparent as the Default Background. I have also tried No Change, and the Background Image will not show. I have to set Background Improv to None. IMO this negates the advantage of Background Improv.

This started as soon as I installed the 6/30/2009 update.

EDIT:
I just found that if I manually click the transparent button on the Plug-in Panel, the background image becomes available. It is as if the Display Properties is not triggering the Transparent option as it should.

RE: Import lots of XML Songs by iamgap in User Support - V7

I haven't used it, but there is an import from XML feature. It is not a default Plug-in, so you have to select it during the install. You can add it by running the SSP installer again. The installer will only install items you check. Also note that it is a Professional plug-in, so you cannot install it if you have a basic license.

You can also install the Plug-in using the SSP Updater. Start Menu\Programs\SongShow Plus\SongShow Plus Update. Select All available components and Click here to check for updates. XML Importer will be an option under the Proffessional Level Plug-ins.

RE: May 2009 Edition Released by osborn4 in Latest News

If your projector has a freeze function and the content of the main screen isn't going to change, then you could freeze the main projector and show whatever you want on the secondary display.

But you'd have to remember to change what you are displaying back before you unfroze the main projector.

If they make the second screen editable that would be hugh!

I was looking at Media Shout for that reason. Every support person I talked to said the same thing "the second display shows the same as the first except no background", but on the forums I found a person that found a way to edit the second display. I would rather use Song Show. Our media team really likes its ease of use.

As I understand it, the feature will only show the same words on both monitors, just different formatting.

I'm excited about the secondary display output. Has anyone figured out how to edited the secondary display? We currently use two computers. One computer displaying lyrics only for the congregation, and the other computer displaying lyrics and notes to the praise team. If Song Show will allow editing of the secondary display, we can get by with one less computer and operator.

RE: Change DataPath to use external drive? by osborn4 in User Support - V7

Yes. In SSP, go to Tools -> Utilities and select Data Files Setup From there, follow the bouncing ball.

You will need to be sure and have that drive attached whenever you fire up SSP. But I don't know why it wouldn't work.

I saw it. But I had to click in and enter my church's software ID to get in to the plug ins page.

Change DataPath to use external drive? by jmsuttle in User Support - V7

I just added an external drive to our media computer, and would like to change the data/file path for our SSP items to this external drive.  Is it possible to change the default file location?  If so, please direct me to the function in SSP.  The current location default is as follows:

DataPath: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\R-Technics\SongShow Plus

Thank you in advance,
Jessica

I plan to purchase the H.264 plug-in.

Do I need one for each system, or is it a stie license for the projection and and workstation systems?

Thanks, Mark

Am I correct in my thinking that the New Public Bibles are already included in the install; and the $25 fee is per machine/per translation only for the bibles listed above?
Yes, you are correct. At least the public domain versions got loaded with the preview version. So I would assume they are still there.
