Drivers, Codecs, and Filters
MPEG-1 drivers, codecs, and filters are installed with all installations of Windows XP. You can generally trust that an MPEG-1 file will run on any system using SongShow Plus.
Video Resolution
MPEG 1 has certain limitations that make it less desirable to use and other file formats. The primary limitation is that a standard MPEG 1 file has a resolution of only 352x240 (intended for NTSC use). When you consider that most projectors today are running at SGA and XGA resolutions, you can see why a source video at the lower resolution will likely not look good when stretched to the higher resolution of the projector. However, apparently, it is possible to render MPEG 1 files at a higher resolution than what is defined by the MPEG 1 specification. I don't know if these higher resolution MPEG 1 files will always work in all situations, but I don't think it should be assumed that they will.
Sample Files
Presently, both the Mission Media and Fowler Production sample files distributed with SongShow Plus are in an MPEG-1 format. However, due to higher compression, the Mission Media files are of a lesser quality.
If you have WinDVD installed and your Mpeg1 files are slow or stuttering, uninstall WinDVD and see if your mpeg1 files run better. If they do reinstall WinDVD. Occasionally if things are done out of order, the WinDVD mpeg2 codec gets registered in place on the mpeg1 codec on the system. Uninstalling WinDVD and playing an Mpeg1 corrects this issue.
